Let’s start with a thought-provoking question: Are you truly maximizing the value of your time? It’s a resource that’s equally distributed to each of us—those relentless, ticking 24 hours of the day. Yet, it’s fascinating how some people seem to extract so much more from their allotment than others. The secret? It’s not about how much time we have, but rather how we choose to use it.

Consider the high achievers and industry leaders who seem to operate on a different temporal plane. Take someone like Richard Branson, for example. Despite sharing the same time constraints as the rest of us, his accomplishments and business growth are a testament to his strategic use of time. It’s a lesson I’ve learned firsthand, especially after a period of self-reflection towards the end of last year.

My life, much like yours, I imagine, is a juggling act. Between running a business, caring for clients, and nurturing a young family, there’s little room for error. But I didn’t stop there—I also poured myself into volunteer work. From sports to business associations and networking groups, my calendar was a mosaic of commitments. However, I soon realised that this overextension was hindering my ability to focus on what mattered most: my business and its growth.

It became clear that I needed to reassess my involvements. The sporting commitment, linked to our local netball club, was manageable, with its demands peaking only at the start and end of the season. This was my way of giving back to the community without overwhelming my schedule.

But what about the business-related volunteering? One group provided me with a wealth of leads and opportunities for growth, both personally and professionally. The other, however, offered little in return, consuming my time and mental space without contributing to my business objectives.

It was time for a tough decision, and interestingly, the universe seemed to conspire to help me make it. I chose to let go of the commitment that wasn’t serving my goals. This experience led me to a powerful realisation: we must constantly evaluate the return on investment of our time.

So now, I pose the question to you. How are you allocating your time? Is it truly adding value to your life and your business? Are there tasks or commitments that are obstructing your path to success? It’s worth considering whether you’re taking on too much, perhaps out of a belief that no one else can do it quite like you. This mindset can be a barrier to efficiency and growth.

Take a moment to reflect on your daily activities. If you’re not seeing the results you want, something has to change. It could be as simple as delegating tasks, stepping back from low-impact activities, or reorganizing your priorities.
