Welcome back, fellow entrepreneurs! As we usher in 2025, I find myself reflecting on a question that is both simple and profound: Why are you in business? This query isn’t just about the products we sell or the services we offer; it’s about the very essence of our entrepreneurial spirit.
I’ve just returned from a rejuvenating four-week break, a staycation filled with family visits, beach days, leisurely walks, and admittedly, a generous pour or two of wine. The downtime was blissful, and unlike times past, the thought of returning to work didn’t fill me with dread but with anticipation. It’s a stark contrast to the unease that used to knot my stomach at the end of a holiday, signaling that I was not where I was meant to be.
This time, I was eager to dive back into the year, to re-engage with my business and the goals ahead. It sparked a realisation: the importance of understanding why we became entrepreneurs in the first place. It’s a question I’ve posed to my clients in workshops, often leading to powerful moments of clarity and, occasionally, tears. Too many business owners neglect to pause and revisit their founding motivations, to measure if their current path aligns with their initial aspirations.
For me, the entrepreneurial call was clear, though the specifics of my business were not. I had an intrinsic love for business, which ultimately manifested in my passion for guiding other business owners to not only build successful companies but also fulfilling lives. Throughout my morning walk, I pondered my ‘why.’ I yearned for autonomy, to break free from the constraints of traditional employment, to not be at the mercy of a boss, rigid vacation policies, or the guilt of tending to a sick child from home.
This year is particularly momentous for my company as we celebrate a decade of growth and learning. Ten years is a significant milestone, one that many businesses never reach. It’s a testament to staying true to one’s vision and the relentless pursuit of that initial spark.
During my break, I encountered others dreading their return to work, while I was genuinely excited. I still had a week left of my holiday, yet I was looking forward to reconnecting with my clients and helping them discover their ‘why,’ to propel them towards their vision.
So, I ask you, what drove you to start your business? Was it a natural progression of your skills, or perhaps a desire for independence? For me, the clarity came with parenthood, the nonsensical nature of justifying my time management to others when my children needed me.
Take a moment to consider your catalyst. What did you hope to achieve when you ventured into the world of business? Are you living the life you envisioned, or are you on the path to it? If you find yourself at a crossroads or in need of guidance, the first step is to crystallise your ‘why.’
